Aylsham Town Council

Welcome to Aylsham Town Council.

The Council serves a population of 6000 people in the Norfolk town of Aylsham. There are 13 Councillors, who represent the whole town (no wards).

Services provided by the Town Council include: allotments (2 sites), street lighting, public toilets, cemetery, maintenance of the closed churchyard, recreation ground, amenity areas, christmas lights, use of the town hall as a community hall, Monday and Friday markets, and Farmers Markets on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays each month. Additionally, the Council undertakes other functions via Agency Agreements with District and County Councils, including monitoring car parks, street cleaning and litter collection, and Highway verge cutting.

The Town Council office, situated within the Town Hall on the Market Place, is open Monday to Friday from 09:30 to 12:30.  Due to administrative commitments, and the variety of meetings she attends, the Town Clerk is only available by prior appointment.

Assisted by a dedicated group of volunteers led by Lloyd Mills, Hon. Archivist, the Town Council has responsibility for the Aylsham Archive, a wonderful collection of printed material and artefacts spanning over 200 years.  The Archive is usually open each Tuesday morning from 10a.m. to 12noon – but please check with the Council office first.  We are currently developing a dedicated Archive section on this website, but please bear with us in the meantime.

The Council was awarded Quality Council Status in June 2008 following the submission of a portfolio of evidence under several sections, which when combined, demonstrated that the Town Council is well run, able to deliver local services efficiently, and better able to represent the local community to the principal authorities.

Aylsham was awarded Cittaslow status in November 2004, and became a member of the international network of towns “where the living is good” – nothing to do with “slow” other than in the “quality” sense, a town that cares about quality of life for its residents and visitors.

More information about Cittaslow and the Cittaslow Community Events Committee can be found on the relevant pages.

Aylsham Market Place Roadworks

Aylsham Market Place

There have been a few “teething troubles” since the re-surfacing work was completed, but hopefully things will settle down soon.

The central parking area and the spaces immediately outside the Town Hall is a pedestrian only zone on market days and Saturdays, the latter to allow for the Farmers’ Markets.  The Council is currenly in discussion with  the Parking Enforcement people on arrangements for non-market Saturdays and days when there is not a full complement of general market stalls.

Cittaslow “Burns Night Supper”

Cittaslow Aylsham staged its first Burns Night Supper on 28  January and judging by the praise it received, it probably won’t be its last.

Aylsham Town Hall was the venue and over 40 people sat down to enjoy a traditional Burns Supper meal of haggis, neeps and tatties, followed by deliciously creamy cranachan.  Shepherds Pie was also served, including a vegetarian option, while a wee dram was included for the ‘Address and subsequent Toast to the Haggis’, conducted by Ayrshire-born Sandy Reynolds-Mckay.

The evening would not have been complete without a mention of Robert Burns himself in ‘The Immortal Memory’ address, a poem especially written for the occasion by Sandy Reynolds-McKay, who also provided the traditional unaccompanied vocal tribute of “My Love is Like a Red Red Rose.”  This was followed by the  Toast to the Lassies – with suitable reply – ending of course, a rendition of all five verses of Auld Lang Syne which involved everyone present.

Commenting on the success of the evening, Chairman of Cittaslow Aylsham, Liz Jones said, “Thanks to Cittaslow supporters, we have been able to present a really successful evening which I’m sure was enjoyed by everyone.  Community events like this are what Cittaslow is all about and I for one am looking forward to the next one!”

Grants from Recycling Income

Did you know that the Town Council uses the income from recycling glass and paper via the bring banks at the Bure Valley Railway site as a “charity fund” to help local charities and community organisations.  If this would be of interest to your organisation, here are the guidelines to help you make an application.  All applications should be addressed to the Town Clerk at the Town Council office (full address on the Home page) for consideration by the Council.
