Aylsham Town Council

Welcome to Aylsham Town Council.

The Council serves a population of 6000 people in the Norfolk town of Aylsham. There are 13 Councillors, who represent the whole town (no wards).

Services provided by the Town Council include: allotments (2 sites), street lighting, public toilets, cemetery, maintenance of the closed churchyard, recreation ground, amenity areas, christmas lights, use of the town hall as a community hall, Monday and Friday markets, and Farmers Markets on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays each month. Additionally, the Council undertakes other functions via Agency Agreements with District and County Councils, including monitoring car parks, street cleaning and litter collection, and Highway verge cutting.

The Town Council office, situated within the Town Hall on the Market Place, is open Monday to Friday from 09:30 to 12:30.  Due to administrative commitments, and the variety of meetings she attends, the Town Clerk is only available by prior appointment.

Assisted by a dedicated group of volunteers led by Lloyd Mills, Hon. Archivist, the Town Council has responsibility for the Aylsham Archive, a wonderful collection of printed material and artefacts spanning over 200 years.  The Archive is usually open each Tuesday morning from 10a.m. to 12noon – but please check with the Council office first.  We are currently developing a dedicated Archive section on this website, but please bear with us in the meantime.

The Council was awarded Quality Council Status in June 2008 following the submission of a portfolio of evidence under several sections, which when combined, demonstrated that the Town Council is well run, able to deliver local services efficiently, and better able to represent the local community to the principal authorities.

Aylsham was awarded Cittaslow status in November 2004, and became a member of the international network of towns “where the living is good” – nothing to do with “slow” other than in the “quality” sense, a town that cares about quality of life for its residents and visitors.

More information about Cittaslow and the Cittaslow Community Events Committee can be found on the relevant pages.

Neighbourhood Plan – helping to shape Aylsham’s future

As part of the Localism Agenda, the Town Council is preparing a Neighbourhood Plan which will include setting out policies for the future use of land in Aylsham.  This is a fantastic opportunity for the whole community to directly influence planning in the town as the Neighbourhood Plan will shape all future development in Aylsham.

The Town Council is leading the process, but if you would like to become actively involved, please contact Mo Anderson-Dungar, Town Clerk at the Council office or via email to townclerk@aylsham-tc.gov.uk

You may not have the time to be part of a working group, but your views are important.  What issues would you like to see addressed as part of the Neighbourhood Plan?  Let the Town Council have your views – call into the office on a weekday morning, email the Town Clerk as above, telephone 01263 733354 or write to the Council at Town Hall, Market Place, Aylsham, Norwich  NR11 6EL.

If you belong to one of Aylsham’s many clubs, societies and organisations, members of the Steering Group would be grateful for a few minutes at one of your meetings in the next couple of months to talk about the Neighbourhood Plan and the process.  Contact the Town Council office, details as above.

Grants from Recycling Income

Did you know that the Town Council uses the income from recycling glass and paper via the bring banks at the Bure Valley Railway site as a “charity fund” to help local charities and community organisations.  If this would be of interest to your organisation, here are the guidelines to help you make an application.  All applications should be addressed to the Town Clerk at the Town Council office (full address on the Home page) for consideration by the Council.
